Kusatsu Onsen is a hot spring resort with a rich hot spring atmosphere, with its steamy hot spring fields and rivers of hot water flowing in the west and open-air baths.

There are more than 100 naturally gushing hot springs of various sizes, and the amount of natural hot spring water gushing out at a rate of more than 32,300 liters per minute is the highest in Japan.
There are many attractions unique to the town of hot springs, such as the hot springs where the hot water fumigation and the Yumomi dance are demonstrated.

Kusatsu Onsen was called one of the “Three Famous Hot Springs” along with Arima Onsen and Gero Onsen in the Muromachi Period (1336-1573), and since the Edo Period (1603-1868), it has been called one of the “Three Famous Springs of Japan.

The pH level is extremely acidic at around 2.0, which is effective in sterilizing bacteria.
It has long been known as a medicinal hot spring, and it is said to cure any illness except love.

Hot water fields
Hot spring water of 4,437 liters per minute gushes out all year round. This hot spring water is poured into several long wooden flumes to lower the temperature and collect hot spring flowers before being sent to the various inns.

Yumomi (hot water freshening)
The hot spring in front of Yubatake is known for its traditional custom of “Yumomi and Yumomi dance. Yumomi is the process of lowering the temperature of the hot water by firring it with a long board.

Public bathhouses
There are 16 public bathhouses throughout the town, including Chiyo-no-yu and Jizo-no-yu, where the traditional bathing method of “jikan-yu” has been handed down from generation to generation.

Otaki no Yu
Centered around a spacious large bathhouse and large open-air baths that can accommodate 100 men and 100 women at the same time, the bathhouse is also equipped with utaseyu, sauna, and amaeshizu. The 25-meter-wide, 3-meter-high “yunotaki” waterfall is the centerpiece of the facility.
The underground bathhouse is made of pine trees, and is full of the “ideyu” (hot spring) atmosphere.

Terme Terme
Hotel Village, located in the Bälz Forest of the Kusatsu Plateau, has been working to create a full-fledged spa resort park (couer park) based on Dr. Bälz’s concept and the German spa resort. Therme Thermae is one of the facilities within the park. Therme means “hot spring” in German, or the majestic baths of ancient Rome. The building has one floor above ground and two below. The building has one floor above ground and two below, and consists of an athletic bathing zone where swimsuits are required, and separate hot spring and sauna zones for men and women. The latter is a nude zone centering on traditional Japanese hot spring baths, and is equipped with a variety of hot springs, including uchisetu, mushiyu, atsuyu, tsuyu, lounging area, kaburi-yu, jikan-yu, me-no-yu, kake-no-yu, asa-yu, ji-steam, nagayu and mi-yu, and saunas in high and medium temperatures. In the lobby zone, there is a café-restaurant and a store selling a variety of alcoholic beverages. All of the zones are bright and open.
