In winter, the lake freezes over and becomes a destination for ice fishing for smelt. Covered in snow and ice, Lake Baragi takes on an entirely different character from its summer appearance.

Camping beside the Lake
Baragi Highland Campground
Baragi Highland Campground is located directly beside Lake Baragi, allowing visitors to camp at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters. The site is surrounded by the mountains of the area, including Mount Asama, Mount Azumaya, and Mount Kusatsu-Shirane.
The facilities are relatively simple. There are five automobile camping sites, while most of the campground consists of open free-use areas where campers can choose their preferred location.
With fishing and canoeing available on the lake, the campground provides an opportunity to spend time closely connected with the surrounding natural environment.
MUJI Campagna Tsumagoi Campground
Another campground on the lakeshore is MUJI Campagna Tsumagoi Campground. Outdoor programs are offered here, including fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching.
The sport fishing area mainly follows a catch-and-release policy, while keeping trout is also possible under the applicable rules. During winter, visitors can also experience ice fishing for smelt.
With different programs available throughout the year, the campground offers a wide range of ways to enjoy the natural surroundings of Lake Baragi.
Relaxing at Tsumagoi Baragi Onsen
A Hot Spring Just Five Minutes from the Lake
Approximately five minutes on foot from Lake Baragi is Tsumagoi Baragi Onsen, where visitors can relax at the day-use bathing facility Kohannoyu.
Spring Quality and Traditional Benefits
The hot spring is classified as an alkaline simple hot spring, with a source temperature of approximately 38.2°C. The water is known for its gentle feel on the skin and is traditionally said to be beneficial for conditions such as rheumatism, neuralgia, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, and chronic digestive disorders.
Facilities for a Relaxing Stay
The spacious bathing facilities are designed to provide a comfortable and relaxing experience. After bathing, visitors can rest while looking out at the surrounding highland scenery through large windows.
The facility also includes a restaurant and souvenir shop, where visitors can enjoy a meal and purchase local specialties from Tsumagoi.
Azumaya Gondola and Nearby Facilities
Panoramic Views from the Highlands
Nearby, the Azumaya Gondola carries visitors to an elevation of approximately 2,100 meters. From the upper area, magnificent views extend toward Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, Mount Asama, and Lake Baragi.
The surrounding area also features a Soccer Village with six grass pitches. Taking advantage of the cool highland climate, the facility is used for training camps, tournaments, and other sporting activities.
Access to Lake Baragi
Lake Baragi can be reached from Manza-Kazawaguchi Station on the JR Agatsuma Line.
By car, visitors can approach from the Usui-Karuizawa Interchange on the Joshin-etsu Expressway via the Asama-Shirane Volcano Route, or from the Ueda-Sugadaira Interchange via National Route 144.
