A Cultural Landmark Inside Takasaki Tower 21
Takasaki Tower Museum of Art occupies the third and fourth floors of Takasaki Tower 21. Completed in 1998, Takasaki Tower 21 is a high-rise complex near the East Exit of Takasaki Station.
The lower floors contain commercial and business facilities, while the upper floors include residential apartments. Offices, medical facilities, and other urban services are also located within the complex.
The museum represents an interesting combination of urban convenience and cultural space. Visitors can step directly from one of Takasaki’s busiest transportation areas into a quiet environment devoted to art.

The Museum’s History and Rebirth as a Public Museum
The museum originally opened as a private institution called Takasaki Tower Museum of Art, established to house and display a collection of Japanese paintings belonging to Yamazaki Seizō, the third son of Yamazaki Taneji.
However, difficulties attracting visitors, including the lack of dedicated parking for museum visitors, eventually led to the original museum closing in 2001.
Later that same year, valuable works from the Yamazaki Group’s collection were donated to Takasaki City. On November 15, 2001, the museum reopened as the Takasaki Tower Museum of Art under municipal management.
This new beginning transformed the museum into a cultural institution accessible to both local residents and visitors to Takasaki.
Yamazaki Taneji and His Contribution to Japanese Art
The history of the museum is closely connected with Yamazaki Taneji (December 8, 1893–August 10, 1983), the founder of the Yamazaki Group.
Yamazaki was known as a successful commodities and stock market trader, as well as a businessman and educator. He founded companies including Yamazaki Securities, now part of SMBC Nikko Securities, Yamazaki Bussan, and Yamatane Corporation.
Yamatane Corporation developed businesses centered on warehousing and wholesale rice distribution. Its rice wholesale business grew into one of the major operations in the industry, with products such as Yamatane Family Rice distributed throughout Japan.
Alongside his activities in the business world, Yamazaki Taneji devoted considerable attention to collecting works of art, particularly Japanese paintings. He also contributed to the promotion and preservation of Japanese culture.
His passion for Japanese painting became an important part of the history behind the collection associated with Takasaki Tower Museum of Art.
Takasaki Tower 21
A Landmark at the East Exit of Takasaki Station
Takasaki Tower 21 is a high-rise building and residential tower located in Sakae-machi, Takasaki. Completed in 1998, it has become a recognizable landmark in the city.
The complex stands within the commercial district around the East Exit of Takasaki Station and is connected to the station by a pedestrian deck. Its lower floors contain commercial and business spaces, while the upper floors are used for residential purposes.

The museum is approximately a one-minute walk from the East Exit of JR East and Joshin Electric Railway’s Takasaki Station.
