One of Gunma’s Tallest Grand Torii Gates
The first landmark visitors notice when approaching the Koizumi area is the shrine’s impressive Grand Torii Gate, which stands approximately 22.17 meters high.
One of the tallest torii gates in Gunma Prefecture, it can be seen from a considerable distance and serves as a striking landmark welcoming visitors to the shrine.
Its imposing vermilion structure creates a memorable first impression and has become one of the defining symbols of Koizumi Inari Shrine.
A Mystical Approach Lined with Around 300 Vermilion Torii Gates
The most distinctive feature of Koizumi Inari Shrine is the large number of vermilion torii gates standing along the approach to the worship hall.
Approximately 300 torii gates, donated by worshippers and believers as expressions of gratitude or prayers for blessings, form three rows extending for around 100 meters.
The long succession of vermilion gates creates a striking and atmospheric scene. Sunlight filtering between the gates adds to the mysterious atmosphere, making the approach a popular spot for photography as well as worship.
Walking through the seemingly endless rows of torii offers visitors an opportunity to experience one of the most recognizable visual traditions associated with Inari shrines in Japan.
A Mysterious Shrine Grounds Filled with White Foxes
Foxes are traditionally regarded as the messengers of Inari, and numerous white fox statues donated by worshippers can be found behind the worship hall.
The sight of the many fox statues gathered together creates a distinctive and mysterious atmosphere and is one of the memorable features of the shrine.
Visitors can also purchase abura-age, or fried tofu, which is traditionally associated with foxes in Japanese Inari traditions. An unmanned stall near the approach sells the tofu, which visitors can then offer at the worship hall or to the guardian fox statues.
A Shrine Preserved by the Local Community
Unlike many shrines administered primarily by a resident head priest, Koizumi Inari Shrine is maintained largely by the local ujiko community, or parishioners with traditional ties to the shrine.
Members of the community take turns serving as shrine representatives and helping to maintain the grounds and traditions. This system reflects the shrine’s close relationship with the people of the surrounding area.
Through the continued support of local residents, Koizumi Inari Shrine has preserved its traditions and remained an important center of worship for generations.
Seasonal Scenery and the Koizumi Cosmos Fields
Koizumi Inari Shrine offers beautiful scenery throughout the seasons. In spring, cherry blossoms create an attractive contrast with the shrine’s vermilion torii gates.
In autumn, the surrounding Koizumi Cosmos Fields become one of the area’s main attractions. From around early to late October, approximately 6.6 hectares around the Grand Torii are covered with colorful cosmos flowers.
The combination of the enormous torii gate, fields of cosmos, and distant views of Mount Akagi creates a spectacular landscape and makes the area particularly popular with photographers.
Visitors arrive throughout the day, from the soft light of early morning to the warm colors of sunset, to enjoy the beautiful autumn scenery.
Annual Events
Various religious events are held at Koizumi Inari Shrine throughout the year.
At New Year, many visitors come for their first shrine visit of the year, praying for business prosperity, family safety, and other blessings.
The shrine’s Spring Grand Festival is held annually on April 15. It is an important local religious event during which prayers are offered for abundant harvests and the prosperity of the community.
On the 1st of each month and during the first three days of the New Year, stalls are also set up around the shrine grounds, creating a lively atmosphere for visitors.
