The Legend Behind the Name
The name Monogatari-yama, literally meaning “Story Mountain,” is connected with a local legend.
It is said that a mountain castle once stood in this area. When the castle fell, the treasures of the castle were supposedly buried somewhere in the mountains, beneath or near a huge rock known as Menbe-iwa.
This story is said to have given the mountain its name. The combination of a lost castle, hidden treasure, and a massive isolated rock formation gives Monogatari-yama an atmosphere of mystery that is particularly appealing to hikers.
The Impressive Menbe-iwa Rock
Near the summit area, visitors can see Monogatari-yama on one side and the striking rectangular mass of Menbe-iwa on the other.
Menbe-iwa is an imposing rock formation with steep cliff faces. Climbing to the top is currently not permitted for safety reasons.
Its distinctive shape and towering appearance make it a memorable landmark and a fitting centerpiece for the legend surrounding Monogatari-yama.
Hiking Monogatari-yama
A Challenging Mountain for Experienced Hikers
The trailhead can be reached from the area around Sun Sports Land along National Route 254. Its location relatively close to a major road makes Monogatari-yama accessible for a day hike.
However, the trail is not an easy walk. Some sections feature steep climbs and rocky slopes covered with loose stones and rocks, known in Japanese as gareba.
Because of this rugged terrain, the mountain is generally more suitable for intermediate hikers than complete beginners. Proper hiking shoes and appropriate equipment are recommended, and visitors should carefully assess trail conditions and their own experience before setting out.
Spring Flowers and Akayashio Azaleas
