A Gentle, Soothing Hot Spring
The waters of Kawaba Onsen are classified as an alkaline simple hot spring, with a spring temperature of approximately 39°C. The water is colorless and clear, with a soft and gentle feel on the skin.
Because the water is relatively mild and non-irritating, it is suitable for a wide range of visitors. Soaking in the warm water gradually warms the body from within and provides a relaxing way to ease away the fatigue of everyday life.
Outdoor baths are especially enjoyable, allowing guests to admire the surrounding mountain scenery while bathing. The landscape changes with the seasons, from fresh green foliage in spring and deep greenery in summer to colorful autumn leaves and snow-covered scenery in winter.
A Quiet Hot Spring Village in the Mountains
Kawaba Onsen has a peaceful atmosphere, with several accommodations scattered across the mountainous area overlooking Mount Hotaka and along the flatter land beside the Usune River.
Unlike large and busy hot spring resorts, Kawaba is characterized by its small scale and tranquility. Its appeal lies precisely in the opportunity to slow down and enjoy peaceful surroundings without the crowds of a major tourist destination.
The local inns offer their own styles of hospitality and serve regional ingredients, including fresh vegetables and river fish produced or harvested in and around Kawaba Village. Some accommodations also offer day-use bathing, allowing visitors to stop by during a sightseeing trip without staying overnight.
A Hot Spring with a Legend Dating Back 1,200 Years
The origins of Kawaba Onsen are traditionally said to date back approximately 1,200 years. According to local legend, the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi visited the area while traveling and stopped at a house in search of water.
An elderly woman at the house kindly shared her water with him. As a gesture of gratitude, Kobo Daishi is said to have struck the ground with his walking staff. Hot steam then rose from the earth, and a hot spring began to flow.
This legend has been passed down through generations and reflects the long relationship between the hot spring and the local community. Bathing here while remembering the area’s ancient history can make the experience particularly memorable.
