The Foothills of Mount Haruna and the Tone River
Yoshioka’s landscape can broadly be divided into two geographical areas. The western half lies along the foothills of Mount Haruna, where gently sloping terrain ranges from approximately 200 to 900 meters above sea level.
The eastern half consists mainly of elevated terraces formed from older sedimentary layers, generally ranging from 100 to 200 meters above sea level. Residential areas and farmland are spread across this relatively level terrain.
Because Yoshioka lies within the Tone River watershed, it also benefits from abundant water resources. These resources support both agriculture and everyday life, while the area’s changing seasonal scenery adds to its appeal for sightseeing and outdoor recreation.

Places to Enjoy Nature
One of Yoshioka’s most representative natural attractions is Funao Falls. Flowing down from the Mount Haruna mountain range, the waterfall is surrounded by lush forest and offers beautiful scenery throughout the year.
Nearby, Funao Nature Park and its barbecue area provide convenient spaces for families and groups to enjoy outdoor activities surrounded by nature.
Other parks around the town, including Shiroyama Miharashi Park, Uenoda Fureai Park, and Fureai Yasuragi Park, offer places for walking, sports, recreation, and community activities.
Unique Cultural and Hands-On Attractions
The Ikaho Toy, Doll and Car Museum attracts visitors from both within and outside the town. Its collection includes nostalgic toys, dolls, and classic cars, making it an entertaining destination for several generations.
At Ogura Grape Country, visitors can enjoy grape picking during the harvest season and experience the agricultural bounty of the region firsthand.
Yoshioka Onsen, located at Roadside Station Yoshioka Onsen, combines hot spring bathing with local shopping. It is a convenient stop where travelers can relax in the baths while browsing regional specialties and agricultural products.
History and Cultural Heritage
Ancient Burial Mounds and the Former Post Town
Yoshioka is home to numerous ancient burial mounds, including Mitsuya Kofun, the Minamishimo Kofun Group consisting of burial mounds A through E, and Takizawa Kofun.
These archaeological sites provide evidence that people were living in this area many centuries ago and offer valuable insight into the ancient history of the region.
During the Edo period, important routes such as the Mikuni Kaido and Sado Kaido passed through the area, and Noda-juku developed as a post town.
Today, visitors can still see historic buildings such as the Morita Residence, the former honjin of Noda-juku, as well as traces of the old post-town streetscape. These sites offer an opportunity to explore Yoshioka’s history on foot.
Traditional Performing Arts and Religious Heritage
Temples and shrines can be found throughout Yoshioka, including Sangu Shrine. Traditional events such as daidai kagura, a form of sacred Shinto dance and music, and traditional lion dances continue to be preserved by local communities.

Products Inspired by the Local Landscape
Among Yoshioka’s best-known local specialties are the grapes grown in Ogura Grape Country and Yoshioka-style okkirikomi, a traditional regional noodle dish.
Okkirikomi is a hearty Gunma-style dish in which thick, wide noodles are simmered with vegetables in a flavorful broth. Its rustic taste makes it a beloved example of the region’s traditional home cooking.
Other local products include Funao manju, Ogura dried sweet potatoes, local sake known as “Funao-taki”, as well as locally grown tomatoes and maitake mushrooms.
The market at Roadside Station Yoshioka Onsen is a convenient place to find many of these local products in one location, making it an excellent stop for souvenirs and regional foods.
A Growing Residential Town with a Comfortable Lifestyle
Yoshioka has experienced significant development in recent years, particularly around the Okubo district near Maebashi. Shopping centers, restaurants, and everyday services have become concentrated in the area, making the town increasingly convenient for residents and visitors.
With an area of approximately 20.46 square kilometers, Yoshioka is one of the smaller municipalities in Gunma Prefecture. Despite its compact size, its population has exceeded 20,000 and has continued to grow.
The town offers views of both Mount Akagi and Mount Haruna, two of Gunma’s best-known mountains. At the same time, peaceful rural landscapes can still be found throughout the town, creating a distinctive balance between natural surroundings and modern convenience.

Visitors can explore waterfalls and forests, discover ancient burial mounds and traces of an Edo-period post town, enjoy traditional foods, pick seasonal grapes, or relax in a hot spring. The town’s proximity to the larger urban centers of Maebashi and Shibukawa also makes it an easy destination to include in a Gunma sightseeing itinerary.
Surrounded by the mountains of Akagi and Haruna and dotted with peaceful countryside, Yoshioka offers travelers an opportunity to experience a quieter side of Gunma while still enjoying convenient access to shops, restaurants, and other facilities.
