Michi-no-Eki Minakami Mizukikokan (roadside station)

A Gateway to the Water and Nature of Minakami

Michi-no-Eki Minakami Mizukikokan is a roadside station located along National Route 291 in Minakami Town, Gunma Prefecture. It was formerly known as Michi-no-Eki Minakami Mizukikokan under the town’s former name of Minakami-machi.

Set in a nature-rich environment at the foot of Mount Tanigawa, the facility is located in the upper reaches of the Tone River, an important source of water for the Tokyo metropolitan area. As the northernmost roadside station in Gunma Prefecture, it is a popular stopping point for tourists, hikers, and mountain climbers.

The roadside station is adjacent to Seiryū Park at the entrance to Suwa Gorge. Surrounded by forested mountains and the clear waters of the river, it is a family-friendly destination where visitors can learn about nature, enjoy hands-on activities, and sample local food.

Learning About the Tone River at the Aquatic Life Learning Center

One of the main attractions of Mizukikokan is the Aquatic Life Learning Center, a freshwater aquarium located inside the facility.

The center displays fish and other aquatic creatures found mainly in the upper reaches of the Tone River, helping visitors develop a deeper understanding of freshwater ecosystems and the relationship between water and wildlife.

Impressive Freshwater Fish Tunnel Aquarium

The highlight is a rare freshwater fish tunnel aquarium. Fish swim above and on both sides of visitors, creating the sensation of walking through a river.

Large fish such as black carp and grass carp, which can be found in Lake Kasumigaura and waterways connected to the Tone River system, are also displayed. Their impressive size makes the exhibit fascinating for both children and adults.

Mountain Stream Aquarium and Small Fish Exhibits

The mountain stream aquarium recreates a flowing river environment with a waterfall and allows visitors to observe fish from different parts of the Tone River system, from its upper reaches toward the lower river.

Smaller exhibits introduce visitors to local wildlife, including frogs, aquatic insects, water scorpions, and Japanese tree frogs. These displays offer an easy way to discover the diverse creatures that live around Minakami.

Many of the animals on display are actually local species investigated and collected by the facility’s staff around Suwa Gorge and nearby riverbanks. The emphasis on introducing the area’s real native wildlife makes the center particularly valuable as an environmental learning facility for children.

Doctor Fish Experience

A popular hands-on attraction is the doctor fish experience, featuring Garra rufa.

Visitors are asked to wash their hands and arms thoroughly before and after the experience and to make sure that insect repellent or other chemicals do not come into contact with the aquarium water. Such precautions reflect the facility’s commitment to protecting the small aquatic creatures in its care.

Family-Friendly Activities and Facilities

Climbing Wall

Inside the facility is an approximately 8-meter-high climbing wall where visitors can try a genuine rock-climbing experience.

Such a facility is unusual for a roadside station, and both children and adults can take on the challenge under appropriate safety supervision. Beginners can also enjoy the experience with confidence.

Relaxing in the Foot Bath

An outdoor foot bath provides a relaxing place to rest while looking out over the Tone River.

After hiking, driving, or sightseeing, soaking your feet in warm water while enjoying the surrounding seasonal scenery is an especially pleasant way to unwind.

Seiryū Park and Hands-On Nature Activities

At the adjacent Seiryū Park, families can enjoy seasonal activities such as trout catching during the summer vacation period.

During Golden Week and Silver Week, trout fishing experiences are also offered. Shallow pools provide a safe environment where younger children can enjoy playing in the water and experiencing nature firsthand.

Local Flavors and Regional Products

“Manten Yokochō” Gift and Produce Shop

The facility’s shop offers a wide selection of fresh agricultural products, local specialties, traditional crafts, and handmade goods from Minakami.

Popular products include locally grown vegetables, kawa-nori riverweed prepared using the clear waters of the Tone River, and a wide variety of dried mushrooms.

Visitors can also find local sweets and specialties such as Sennokura Mantaro Manju and Tanigawa pickles.

Another popular product is Minakami Spring Water, bottled directly from the natural waters of the Mount Tanigawa area. Its smooth taste and well-balanced mineral content make it particularly suitable for tea and coffee.

Light Meals and Minakami Dam Curry

The food corner is known for its distinctive specialty, Minakami Dam Curry. The dish is arranged to resemble a dam, making it both a meal and a fun visual experience.

Other menu items include ramen made with locally produced miso, providing convenient options for visitors looking for a meal during their sightseeing trip.

Tourist Information and Local Travel Advice

The facility has a rest and tourist information area stocked with brochures and travel information.

At the information counter, visitors can ask about Mount Tanigawa, nearby attractions, and road conditions. It is particularly useful for travelers visiting Minakami for the first time.

A Piece of Railway History

On the grounds of the roadside station, visitors can see JNR Class EF16 electric locomotive No. 28, which was once used in railway service.

The locomotive is an interesting attraction for railway enthusiasts and also provides a glimpse into the transportation history of the region.

A Roadside Station Where Nature, Learning, and Relaxation Meet

Michi-no-Eki Minakami Mizukikokan is much more than a place to stop during a drive. It is a comprehensive tourism facility where visitors can learn about the natural environment of the Tone River headwaters, enjoy hands-on experiences, discover local food, and relax amid beautiful scenery.

The roadside station is conveniently located approximately 5 minutes by car from the Minakami Interchange of the Kan-Etsu Expressway, making it an ideal stop before or after hiking, sightseeing, or driving through the mountains.

Surrounded by the magnificent scenery of Mount Tanigawa and the clear waters of the Tone River, Mizukikokan offers families and travelers a relaxing way to experience the natural richness of Minakami.
